The dreaded 'You have been Scanned'
We've all had it, and we know that if we see it, that scanner has likely lit up everyone around them in the scanner's radius for the next few seconds... even after he's put the scanner away, while doing a 360 degree pirouette during it's scan interval.
But how do we fix it? The ability to know where the enemy is, is invaluable (as shown by any match where one team has a scanner, and the other team doesn't, but how do we bring it back down to where it's not 'GOD' of the battlefield?
What I propose is something similar to the 'Auto-Injector' we have at the moment. If you have the scanner equipped, you can activate it and for around 5 seconds, your view changes.
The walls, floors, and other objects in the game become background while hostile forces and allied forces are illuminated out to a range of 100m through walls etc. Anything you view is put on the map during those 5 seconds, but as soon as you lose sight of them (turning your head away) or the scanner turns off, they are no longer highlighted on the map.
The scanner then goes onto cool down for a period of time (we'll say 5 seconds) before it can be used again.
The perks of this system: - The Scanner can see outlines, so he can more accurately identify what kind of hostiles are incoming. - He can differentiate levels, higher and lower. - Integrated ZOOM option to get better looks at enemy positions from further away. - No 'You have been scanned.' Warning as it's a more passive system.
The intended drawbacks: - The Scanners are still extremely useful, but do not continue to feed you intel while your not using them. - It's harder to move and navigate as the floors, ground, and objects are given shades of blue or another color that mak them hard to distinguish. (But possible.) - You have the scanner in hand, so for the 5 seconds you're scanning, you cannot utilise weapons.
As to how this scanner would look, it could be something like binoculars, or simply be an animation of a guy reach up and flicking a switch on his helmet, and holding his hand there for 5 seconds.

I have, and the idea I posted is a different take on how we can make them work. Not just a statement of fact that they are over-powered and easily exploited.
